Phantroll

Occasional Pitchfork contributor Tom notes the passing of Washington's alt-rock radio station WHFS. I lived in D.C. for a summer only, back in '99, when HFS still played fairly interesting things. The station sponsored Beth Orton's concert, which featured "alt-"country singer Kelly Willis as the opening act. It was a great tandem, and Willis, who grew up in Virginia, talked about how she grew up listening to the station. Then she wryly noted that they never played her stuff. So with that, a hearty "fuck off" to what was left of HFS.

Good memory! I was up pretty close because I have a huge crush on Kelly Willis, so the talking wasn't too bad. But it was such a weird pairing that the talking didn't surprise me. It's cool to expose people to an artist they may not have heard, but when you throw acts together randomly like that you're asking for trouble.
