Waking Ear

We have a pact, you and I. I write down what song I had in my head when I woke up in the morning. And, maybe, why. You click on "What's in your waking ear?" and tell me what's in your head right now. We discover new music and maybe learn something about how our minds work. Yeah?

Phantroll

Guns 'n' Roses/"Civil War" -- In this year in which I've seen the Pixies thrice, this Waking Ear made me think about the biggest acts I've missed in my lifetime that, if I could go back in time, I would've made an effort to see. The top five:

1) Nirvana. Duh.
2) Journey w/Steve Perry. Because that voice will never occur again on earth.
3) GNR! Hot pants! w/Axl and Slash and the whole crew, of course.
4) Elliott Smith. I actually had a ticket once and didn't go for stupid reasons. Regret.
5) Jeff Buckley. Who probably could've handled a Journey cover.

Comments:
I would have to add U2 to that list, but pre-/during the ZooTV tour. That seems to be when they peaked for live performances.

I've noticed a lot of these names probably would have peaked at an age where I would have been too young to appreciate their awesomeness - but if this is a time travel sort of question - but still within the lifetime like a Quantum Leap sort of thing, then I would probably liked to have seen Queen, David Bowie, Johnny Cash, and Bruce Springsteen in the early 80's. I think those would be pretty good live acts. A current live act that I would like to see but haven't yet is The Flaming Lips.

Crap! I just realized, with a pang of guilt, that I listed a bunch of white guys. So I hereby replace Smith with the Sugarcubes, which I really would've liked to have seen back in the day in a club. And I replace Buckley with Miles Davis. There, that should take care of it. And damn, Cash was a good one.

I agree w/ Nirvana and Jeff B. -- but I'd also add Public Enemy (preferably in NYC), and, if we're transcending all time barriers, Otis Redding... and, of course.... Selena. (She's an icon!)

I actually did see Public Enemy this year, but I guess it doesn't really count since they're all ancient.
